Tall children sco r e slightly higher on intelligence tests a nd perfo r m somewhat better academically than their sho r ter classmates, perhaps because mo r e is expected of them, researchers fo r a National Health Examination survey have found. The magnitude of the difference is not large, however, a nd certainly not wo r th giving children growth ho r mones to make them taller, said Dr. Darrell Wilson of Stanfo r d University. He a nd his colleagues concluded there was a definite link between height a nd sco r es on tests of both intelligence a nd achievement. The association remained even after controlling fo r other facto r s, including socioeconomic status, birth o r der, family size a nd rate of physical maturity. Dr. Wilson said the difference was small but significant.The researchers based their findings on data fr om a study involving nearly 14,000 children fr om six to 17 years old.
